Cambodian Red Cross has responded quickly to the flooding emergency in Kompong Thom province, distributing relief aid to 805 families affected by the floodwaters. The province was badly affected by flooding on 25 September 2011, with many homes, properties, infrastructure and crops destroyed. The Cambodian Red Cross team led by Dr Uy Sam Ath, Director of the Disaster Management Department, worked together with the Cambodian Red Cross Kompong Thom branch to distribute relief aid in six of the worst-affected communes. Each family received 30kg of rice, a box of noodles, a box of fresh water, 10 cans of fish, a mosquito net, a blanket and a sarong.
Speaking to the flood-affected people in Brasat Sambo district, H.E. Nam Tom, Honorable President of Cambodian Red Cross Kompong Thom branch, expressed his sympathy for the loss of life and damage to crops and properties that the flooding has caused. He also passed on condolences from Cambodian Red Cross President Bun Rany HunSen, who has shown concern for Cambodia's vulnerable people by assigning CRC teams to help people affected by the flooding without discrimination.
He thanked the Cambodian Red Cross team for their efforts to distribute relief assistance in challenging conditions. Despite rain from dawn until dusk, the team worked hard to ensure aid was distributed to the people who needed it the most.
Dr Uy Sam Ath also spoke at the relief distribution event, adding that regardless of distance, Cambodian Red Cross always reaches out to communities in need. He advised the community to be vigilant of children playing near the floodwaters, to watch out for their health, and to stay positive and try to replant their crops once the floodwaters subside.
Due to flooded roads, the Cambodian Red Cross team was not able to transport the relief aid to Sandan district. Instead the relief distribution took place along the sidewalk in Veal Veng village, Chhuk commune, Brasat Sambo district.
