The family of three people who drowned in Banteay Meanchey province has received relief assistance from Cambodian Red Cross and local authorities.
A mother and two daughters in Char Thmey village, Kok Balang commune, Mongkul Borey district, Banteay Meanchey province were reported dead on 28 September 2011. A day after their deaths Puk Saluy, Deputy Honorable President of Cambodian Red Cross Banteay Meanchey branch, helped distribute aid to the two surviving members of the family.
The deaths occurred when Sar Saleun, age 30, and her husband Pnok Saly, age 31, took their boat to see their flooded rice paddy. Their three children cried to go along with them, reported Y Long, Honorable President of Cambodian Red Cross Mongkul Borey sub-branch. They were afraid to leave the children in their flooded home, so they took their children with them.
When they reached the flooded rice paddy in Koh Teng, close to the Trey Dai Snay conservation area in Char Thmey village, their small boat capsized. As the boat was sinking, the father was able to save his two year-old son. Although nearby villagers tried to help, unfortunately his wife and two daughters, ages six and nine, could not be rescued from the sinking boat.
In delivering relief assistance to the surviving members of the family, Puk Saluy conveyed his deepest sympathy and profound condolence for the tragic loss of three lives in the flooding accident. He helped distribute 6,127,700, Riel, US$25, 220kg of rice and other food supplies. The family also received 3 million Riel and 50kg of rice donated by the provincial disaster management committee, 2,587,700 Riel donated by Balang Council commune, and 540,000 Riel, US$25 and 170 kg of rice donated by Cambodian Red Cross Mongkul Borey sub-branch.
Puk Saluy also passed on condolences from Cambodian Red Cross President Bun Rany Hun Sen, whose concern for Cambodia's vulnerable people is reflected in the slogan "Where there is suffering, Cambodian Red Cross is there to help".
